Research Center for Biomedical Engineering of Xiamen University (Hereinafter referred to as the Center) established in December 2002, is a university-level research institute integrating discipline advantages of clinical medicine, biomaterial, medical instrument and medical information from College of Life Science, Medical School, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, College of Computer and Information Engineering as well as College of Physics and Electromechanical Engineering. Professor Qiqing Zhang is the director of the Center. The Center mainly focuses on the research of new methods, techniques and materials in the field of biomedical engineering. Research directions include biomaterial, nano-technology, tissue engineering, drug delivery system, biomedical testing, diagnosis and therapy devices.

With advanced research and fruitful development as its guidelines, the Center aims to play a leading role domestically and reach advanced international criteria in certain fields. Biomaterials and related products, drug formulations, medical apparatus and instruments are its development focuses and the Center tries to transform the scientific achievements into large-scale products. Talents cultivation starts from master and doctoral students, and gradually extends to undergraduates. Furthermore, it plans to establish postdoctoral research stations. The Center will be built into the first-class research institute with unique and strong strengths so as to make contributions to the development of biomedical engineering and economy for both Xiamen city and Fujian Province. From 2003 to 2009, the Center was approved as Xiamen Municipal Research Center for Biomedical Engineering Technology, Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Biomedical Engineering, Fujian Provincial Practice Base of Biomedical Engineering Graduates and Fujian Provincial Platform for Maritime Polymer Extraction and Biomedical Material Development.
